School Site Council Meeting Minutes 9/1/2010

Call to order
SSC President, Dr. Aurora Villon called to order the regular meeting at 5:03 PM in the school library.
SSC quorum was confirmed
SSC members in attendance:
Parents- David Angelo, Alfredo Martinez, Esther Mejia, and Dr. Aurora Villon
Students- Tina Castellanos, Elise Contreras, Arlene Rodriguez, and Edith Vazquez
Classified Staff- none
Certificated Staff- James Halley, Mary Chapman, and Juventino Gutierrez
Administration- Sam Genis

Visitors in attendance: Martin Martinez, Sarita Mota, Antoinette Paez, Alfred Renteria Jr. , Fredia Rhodes, and Teresa Villegas
Approval of minutes from last meeting
School site council members individually read the May 5th meeting minutes. James Halley motioned/ Alfredo Martinez 2nd the minutes. Minutes approved with corrections.
Student representatives report- Tina Castellanos, Elise Contreras, Arlene Rodriguez, and Edith Vazquez reported the following:
- 9/3 First Varsity football game vs. Los Altos
- ASB is selling baseball style “Class” T-shirts at $12.00 each
- 9/3 Welcome back pep rally assembly at 9:45am. Pepsters and band to perform
- Link crew a success
- 9/3 Dance to be held after the football game
DAC report-; Dr. Aurora Villon reported that District Advisory Council held a productive meeting. Discussed the need for parent information and training as it pertains approving SPSA and or approving budgets. Training would be like a “Budget 101”, in order to help parents make educated decisions and understand “SPSA” and “Budget” jargon. DAC members will ask more questions at their school site councils. James Halley added after Dr. Villon’s report the purpose of our School Site Council.
Special Education- Mr. Gutierrez reported the following:
- Bolstering transitions from ITS to next phase
- Four new teachers
- Luncheon & BBQ great success
- Transition meetings held with Middle school psychologists
EIA SCE/ EIA LEP
- Mr. Genis reported categorical preliminary numbers may be set by next meeting.
GATE- No report
Administration- Mr. Genis reported the following:
- All teachers are not mandated to attend and be part of a Professional Learning Committee (PLC). Leadership teams will be addressing Attendance, Avid, and “Character Counts”. Meetings will be held once a month.
- Dr. Rivera Cote is our new districts superintendent. She comes with secondary experience since she was superintendent at Alhambra and LA Unified District.
- Six staff members attended training for the six pillars of “Character Counts”. The program is funded by Health and Safety grant. Friday’s assembly used to introduce the program to the students.
- Student programs were held this year if they had fines or did not return books from last school year.
- Current enrollment at 3172, a little over projection. “No shows” will be taken out of the system on 9/10/10.
- School emergency drills will begin in the month of October and continue in November. Evaluation and monitoring will be made to make sure procedure and ed. Code is being followed.
- ERHS API is at 715! There has been a forty-four point gain over the past three years. Success of the gain is attributed to teachers, new schedule, tutorials and new CST testing spread out and disseminated by students own core teachers.

- PSA Counselor Update
- Ms. Erica Ornales is the new PSA counselor who is in charge of keeping track of student attendance. Major focus to bring down truancy percentage.

Public Comment
- Tina Castellanos added that ASB held a “Welcome Back “teacher breakfast.
- Antoinette Paez shared her concern that an elective “Choir” class is not notifying parents in advance of performance wardrobe and lyric music costs. Due to that lack of communication from the teacher, Ms. Paez spent over three hundred dollars in three months and finally had to pull her daughter out from the class due the cost.
- Teresa Villegas requested AP Physics class be added to the curriculum. Mr. Genis replied that course is already offered.
- Esther Mejia commented there was an article in the Whittier Daily News regarding ERUSD bond. Mr. Genis commented a letter would be going out to parents this month regarding the bond and it not raising taxes but rather extending the current bond from 2035 to 2055.
