American Sign Language 1 Modern Language This course is a one year college and career preparatory foreign language course for 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders that will prepare students to continue with American Sign Language 2, 3, and 4. Through reading, writing, speaking, and listening students will develop their ASL grammar skills, vocabulary, and knowledge of Deaf culture. Students will meet the stage 1 California State Content Standards for World Languages through use of the foreign language as they dialogue, use of both receptive and expressive skills in conversations, research and discussion of products, perspectives, and practices related to the Deaf community, comparing and contrasting differences between their own culture and Deaf culture, and reading and discussing short stories and narratives as well as current events from the Deaf community. Students will use their American Sign Language skills to show proficiency through presentations, signed conversations, and receptive exams. By the end of the course students will have become proficient in their use of basic American Sign Language used in daily conversation and knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community as a whole.

French 1 Modern Language Fulfills "a - g" requirement.
Students should have passed all courses from the previous year with a “C” or better.
The communicative approach to learning will begin to develop basic skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Students will be exposed to a comprehensive vocabulary of at least 1,000 words which will include basic objects, colors, time, days of the week, greetings, numbers, frequently used adjectives, verbs, and classroom expressions.

French 2 Modern Language Fulfills "a - g" requirement.
Prerequisite: French 1 with a grade of “C” or better.
The comprehensive vocabulary increases to at least 1,700 words including vocabulary and functions concerning meals, lodging, transportation, normal commands, instructions and expressions of courtesy. The past, present, and future tenses will be stressed.

French 3 Modern Language Fulfills "a - g" requirement.
Prerequisite French 2 with a grade of “C” or better.
A receptive vocabulary of 2,000 words and an active vocabulary of 1,000 words should be attained by the student. Control of grammar will include the most frequent verb forms in all tenses as well as nouns, basic pronoun forms, prepositions, adjective forms, genders, and possessives. Students will be able to form complete sentences and can sustain some lengthy conversations.

French 4 & French, Advanced Placement Modern Language French 4
Fulfills "a - g" requirement.
Prereq: French 3 with a grade of “C” or better.
This course is designed for those students who have chosen to develop their proficiency in the French language in advanced composition and conversation. Students will become skilled in the more intricate levels of the language. They will learn to express opinions, argue, evaluate, and state their intentions verbally and in writing. Students will be prepared to take the Advanced Placement Examination given nationwide at the end of the school year.

Prerequisites: "C" or better in French 4 or 3 (with teacher recommendation based on a placement assessment)
This course is designed for those students who have chosen to develop their proficiency in the French language in advanced composition and conversation to the level of a third year college student. Students will become skilled in the more intricate levels of the language. They will learn to express opinions, argue, evaluate, and state their intentions verbally and in writing. Students will be prepared to take the Advanced Placement Examination given nationwide at the end of the school year.

Spanish 1S Modern Language Fulfills "a - g" requirement.
Prerequisite: Recommendation based on a placement assessment.
Spanish 1S is a beginning level Spanish course for Native Spanish speakers. This class will be taught primarily in Spanish and the Students will have the opportunity to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This class will integrate four modes of communication on a daily basis. Each day the students will work on their ability to improve on their ability to communicate in Spanish using the four modes of communication. The main focus of the class will be to build confidence in reading, writing and to develop the academic language of the native speaker

Prerequisite: Recommendation of the Spanish teacher or rec. based on placement assessment
This is an intermediate-advanced course designed to extensively develop Spanish language in reading, writing, listening and speaking, Course Goals revolve around three key axis: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational language objectives.

Prerequisites: “B” or better in Spanish l “S” or Spanish 2, “C” or better in Spanish 3 or based on a placement assessment.
This course is designed for those students who have chosen to develop their proficiency in the Spanish language in advanced composition and conversation to the level of a third year college student. Students will become skilled in the more intricate levels of the language. They will learn to express opinions, argue, evaluate, and state their intentions verbally and in writing. Students will be prepared to take the Advanced Placement Examination given nationwide at the end of the school year.

Spanish Literature and Culture, Advanced Placement Modern Language Fulfills "a - g" requirement.
Prerequisite: Grade of “C” or better in AP Spanish Language and the rec., of the “AP” Language teacher.
This is the fifth and highest level of Spanish offered at El Rancho High School.This course is structured to allow students to complete the entire AP Spanish Literature reading list, published in the AP Spanish Literature and culture Course Description. This course is a survey course and is conducted completely in Spanish.
